The following is the syllabus for the exams and curriculum for instruction. All words in bold are listed in the glossary and the notes for each year, in the course material .

Theory

1.  Knowledge and definition of the following terms:

Nritya, Kathak Nritya, Tatkaar, Thaat, Salami, Aamad, Tora, Taal, Laya, Kinds of laya(slow, medium, fast), matra, aavartan, vibhag, theka, sam, taali: bhari, khali (phank), thah, doon, chaugun, tihai, hastak

2.  Discussion on music and its two leading systems in India

3.  Knowledge of recoring tatkaar, taal thekas  and toras in Bhatkande or Vishnu Digambar system of Taal notation

4.  Full familiarity of Teentaal, Jhaptaal, Dadra and Kaharwa taals 

 

Second Year- Junior Diploma Award:  There will be a practical exam carrying 100 marks and a theory paper of 50 marks. First year's syllabus is also included.

Practicals

1.  Four difficult tatkaars with hastak, 2 thaats, 1 salami, 1 amad, 5 difficult toras, 1 chakkardaar tora, 2 easy gat-bhav, 2 good tihais in teentaal

2.  Two tatkaars, 1 Thaat, 1 Amad, 5 simple toras, 2 Tihais in Jhaptal

3.  Folk Dances in Dadra and Kaharwa Taals

4.  Clap-marked vocal demonstration of thekas of Ektaal and Sook Taal in basic,double and double speeds

5.  Clap-marked vocal demonstration of Tatkaar and Toras in basic(slow), double and double speeds

Theory

1.  Knowledge and definition of the following terms:

Nritya, Naat, Nratya, Tandava, Lasya, Anga, Pratyanga, Parhant, Gat-Bhav, Mudra and Chakkardaar tora

2.  Basic knowledge of Dhwani and Naad

3.  Knowledge of two prevalent mucis notations of North Indian music namely Bhatkande or Vishnu Digambar system of Taal notation

4.  Knowledge of recoring taal, tatkaar, taal thekas  and toras in Bhatkande or Vishnu Digambar system of Taal notation

5.  Brief history of Kathak Nritya

6.  Brief biography of Maharaj Bindadeen and Kalika Prasad

THIRD YEAR-

 There will be a practical examination carrying 100 marks and one theory paper of 50 marks.  All previous years courses are also included.

 

PRACTICAL

1.                 Performance in teental of two difficult Tatkar with Hastak, 2 new Thaat, 1 Amad, 1Salami, 5 difficult Toras, 1 Paran and 1 Chakkardar Paran.  Performance of Tatkar by foot in Vilambit, double triple and quadruple speeds and practice of its clap-marked vocal demonstration.

2.                 Performance of 2 new Tatkars with Hastaks and Paltas, 1 Chakkardar Tora, 2 difficult Toras and two Tihais in Jhaptal.

3.                 Performance of 2 Thaat, 1 Salami, 1 Amad, Tatkars with hastaks, 4 Toras and two Tihais in Ektal.

4.                 Two Tatkars and two Toras in Sooltal.

5.                 2 Ghoonghat Bhava in Teen-Tal

6.                 Clap marked vocal demonstration of the Thekas in Tevra Tal, Chartal, Sool tal and Dhamar tal in the basic, double and quadruple speeds and performance of foot Tatkars in these Tals in all the aforesaid three speeds.

7.                 Two specially noted folk dances.

 

THEORY

1.                 Knowledge of the following definable terms : -

(a)  Paran Chakkardar Paran, Mushti, Pataka, Tripatak, Mukutkaran, Reechak, Angahar, Upang & Palta

(b)  Origin of sound Kampan, Andolan, Peculiarities of Nada, Nada-Sthan Swara, Chal and Achal Swara, Shuddha and Vikrita Swara, Saptak, (Mandra Madhya and Taar) :

2.                 Brief history of the Lucknow and Jaipur Gharanas of dance

3.                 Brief biography of Achhan Maharaj and Jiyalalji

4.                 Knowledge of Bhatkhande and Vishnu Digambar systems of Tal notation.

5.                 Full familiarity with Tevra, Char Tal, Ara Chartal and Dhamar Tal.

6.                 Place of Dance in INDIAN MUSIC

7.                 Full familiarity with TABLA & MRIDANG (Pakhawaj).

 

 

FOURTH YEAR – SENIOR DIPLOMA

There will be a practical examination carrying 100 marks and a theory paper of 50 marks.  All previous years course is included.

 

PRACTICAL

1.                 Full preparation of dance performance in Teental, Ektal and Jhaptal.  Ability to dance for at least 15 minutes in each of the talas without repeating Bols, One Talangi, One Nrityangi, One Kavitangi and One Mishrangi Tora each in Teental must be practiced.  Demonstration of Ateet and Anaghat through Toras and Teental.

2.                 Demonstration of varities of Ghunghat and Gat-Bhava of Banshi and Panghat.

3.                 Four Tatkars with Hastak, 2 Thaat, One Salami, 1 Amaad, 5 Toras, Two Tihais, 2 Parans and One Chakkardar Paran in Taal Dhamar.

4.                 Knowledge of various rhythmic speeds.  Demonstration of quintuple (5 times) and Aar speeds both by foot-work and clap marking through Tatkar in Teental.

5.                 Two Tatkars and two Tihais eachin Tevra, Chartal and Aara Chartal.

6.                 Any two folk dances.

7.                 Clap –marked and foot-work demonstration of the Thekas in all the Taals prescribed in previous years besides Roopaka, Deepchandi, Dhumali, Pancham Sawari & Aara Chartal in the basic, double, triple and quadruple speeds.

8.                 Practice of singing one Swar Malika each in Yaman, Bilawal and Bhairavi Raagas.

9.                 Elementary practice in playing on the Tabla.

 

 

THEORY

 

Full knowledge of the following definable terms : -

Mudra, Niaks, Sthanak, Ada, Ghumariya, Anchit, Kunchit, Rasa, Bhava, Anubhav, Bhangi-Bhed, Preparation, Acting, Pndi, Pramalu, Stuti, Vichhipti, Hastak, Kasak, Masak, Kataksh, Naaz, Andaz.

 

  1. Detailed and comparative study with full knowledge of the Bhatkhande and Vishnu Digambar systems of Taal-notations.

3.          Introductory and comparative study of the various styles of Indian Classical dances such as Kathak, Manipuri, Kathakali and Bhart-Natyam.

 4.          Complete knowledge of the following topic :-

Samyukt and Asamyukta Mudrayen, Significance of emotion in dance, Study of the themes underlying prevalent Gata-Bhava, Advantage of dancing, Characteristics of modern dances.

5.                 Capacity to record notation of all Taals, Thekas Tatkars & Bols etc, prescribed in the previous and this year, in various rhythmic speeds in both systems – Vishnu Digambar and Bhatkande Taal-notation systems.  Knowledge of ten Prans of Taals.

6.                 Commentary on Varna, Aaroha, Avaroha, Alankar, Thaat, Raga, Suravart (swarmalika), Layakari, distinction between Laya and Layakari.

7.                 Detailed introductory knowledge and capacity to sing simple songs in Ragas : Yaman, Bilawal and Bhairavi.

8.                 Full introductory knowledge of Roopaka, Aara Chartal, Deepchandi, Dhumali and Pancham Swari.

9.                 Brief introduction to the personality and comparative study of dance styles of any two noted Kathak dancers of modern times.

10.            Practice of writing essays concerning music and dance

 

FIFTH YEAR

There will be practical examination carrying 100 marks and a theory paper of 50 marks.  All previous years course is also included.

 

PRACTICAL

1.                 Ability to present the 10 Karans through actual dance demonstration.

2.                 Capacity to dance in Teental for 25 minutes and Dhamar Tal for 15 minutes without repeating the Bols.  Practice of demonstrating emotional dances on sung Bhajans and Thumari.

3.                 Practice in dancing Tandava and Lasya Anga in Kathak style in new themes like Makhan-Chori, Kaliya Daman, Cheer Haran and Govardhan Dharan/

4.                 Capacity to present any two regional folk dances like Garwa, Raas Koli, Chhapeli, Bhangara etc.

5.                 Practice of playing Lahra (naghma) in the  Taals prescribed hitherto.

6.                 Two Thaats, one Aamad, 4 Toras, One Chakkardar Tora, One Chakkardan Paran, Two ordinary paran, 3 Tihais and 3 Tatkars with their Paltas in Roopaka, Dhumali, Chartal : Chautal, Deepchandi and Pancham Sawari.

7.                 Clap-marked and foot-work demonstration in the basic, double, triple and quadruple and Aar Speeds in Lakshmi Tal, Brahmtal, Jat, Addha and Joohmara Taals.

8.                 Practice of playing Thekas of all Taals prescribed hitherto on the Tabla.

9.                 Ability to sing one Swara Malika each in the Raags : Khamaj, Kaafi, Tilang and Bihag.

 

THEORY

1.                 Definition and commentaries on the following : -

Urap,Purap, Tirap, Kasak, Masak, Kataksh, Ghoonghat, Urmai, Surmai, Laag-daant, Jati – Paran, Gat-Niokas, Gat-Tora, Gat- Bhava, Greeva –Bhed, Dam-Bedam, and Gati – Bhed.

 

2.                 Study of the following topics ; -

Traditional costumes, Requirements of a successful dance performance, selection of Ghungharus,Merits and demerits of a dancer, detailed study of the nine Rasas and their use in dance.  Make-up, kinds of glance (Drishti Bhed), Knowledge of Dishas in dance.

3.                 Detailed and comparative study of the Lucknow Jaipur and Banaras school of dance.

4.                 Knowledgeof Nayak-Nayika Bhed.

5.                 Study of biographies of Maharaj Thakur Prasd, Maharaj Ishwari Prasad, Shankar Nambudaripaad and Rukmani Arundel.

6.                 Complete knowledge and capacity to record their taal-notation in various rhythmic speeds in Lakshmital, Brahmtal, Jat, Addha and Jhoomra Taals.

7.                 Detailed knowledge of the Ragas : Khamaj, Kaafi, Tilang and Bihag.

8.                 Full familiarity with the singing style of Dhrupad, Dhumar Dhar, Khayal, Tappa, Thumari and Bhajan

9.                 Introductory knowledge of the rare styles of classical dancing of India such as Odyssey and Kuchipuddi etc.
